Across Hawaiʻi, distance can shape how people experience health and healthcare. Our islands are connected by culture, community, and shared responsibility, yet rural families can still face gaps in information, services, technology, and access to care. Pili Ola exists to help connect those dots.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to strengthen the connections between people, place, knowledge, and care so rural communities across Hawaiʻi have greater access to the resources and support they need to live well. We do this through health education and literacy, community partnerships, workforce development, digital support, telehealth, and other approaches shaped by the needs of the communities we serve.
OUR VISION
We envision a Hawaiʻi where every community — no matter how rural or geographically distant — can be connected to the knowledge, care, and resources it needs to thrive. A Hawaiʻi where technology helps bridge distance without replacing human connection. Where communities have a voice in the solutions created for them. And where no person or place is overlooked simply because they are harder to reach.
Pili Ola is built around a simple belief: the strongest solutions begin with the people and places they are meant to serve.
That means listening before building, meeting people where they are, respecting community knowledge, and bringing the right partners together.
Sometimes that connection is a conversation. Sometimes it is health education that makes information easier to understand and use. Sometimes it is helping someone navigate technology, reach a provider through telehealth, or feel more confident managing their own care. And sometimes it is connecting organizations, providers, community leaders, and resources that have been working toward the same goal but have not yet had the opportunity to work together.
Across islands, across communities, and across systems, Pili Ola brings people and place together so distance does not become
disconnection.

For us, transformation is not simply about introducing something new. It is about strengthening what connects us.
Pili Ola is part of Hawaiʻi's Rural Health Transformation Program and is supported through funding from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This investment allows us to work alongside communities and partners across Hawaiʻi to strengthen rural health, expand connections to care and resources, and build approaches designed to last beyond any single program or project.
